Off The Chart: 8 October 1981

We’d like to say it’s back to normal on this week’s Off The Chart but if you’re a regular listener you’ll know nothing is ever normal around here. All we can say as that there’ll be a host of hits large and small from this day in 1981, three of the week’s new hit albums, a gander at the South African chart, a review of the day’s events, the top five singles in full, plus “exciting news for all readers inside!”1. Whose first four top ten singles peaked at numbers 7, 8, 9 and 10 in that order? Which two songs both feature in two separate medleys at neighbouring chart positions? And whose debut album was banned by the South African Broadcasting Corporation for being “too political and vulgar”? Tune in and find out!

Listen to Off The Chart on Mad Wasp Radio at 9pm every Tuesday, or catch the repeats at 2pm on Thursday or 10am on Saturday. You can stream Mad Wasp Radio via their website, their apps for iOS or Android, or through TuneIn and MyTuner – and don’t forget to tweet along using the hashtag #OffTheChart. If you’re somehow not around for any of the radio broadcasts, catch up on Mixcloud from 4pm on Thursdays.
