Retrospective: Pet Shop Boys announce reissue programme

Pet Shop Boys have announced details of their long awaited reissue programme Catalogue: 1985-2012, which will see all their studio albums for Parlophone remastered and expanded with bonus material.

The duo’s first six albums, from Please to Bilingual were previously reissued in this format back in 2001; these reissues, complete with their “Further listening” discs, will be newly remastered and made available again later in 2017. Before that, similarly expanded versions of the next three albums in the sequence – Nightlife, Release and Fundamental will be released on 28 July.

Released in 1999, Nightlife includes three top twenty hits as well as several tracks that would go on to feature in the Pet Shop Boys’ musical Closer To Heaven. The new remaster comes with two “Further listening” CDs containing demos, remixes, B-sides and previously unreleased material including the full French version of Paris City Boy and their medley of Believe and Song For Guy recorded for ITV’s An Audience With Elton John.

2002’s Release saw the duo explore a more organic sound, with hits including Home and Dry and the almost Oasis-like I Get Along. Again the “Further listening” section runs to two CDs, rounding up unreleased songs, B-sides, two more duets with Sir Elton including an unreleased cover of Gilbert O’Sullivan’s Alone Again, Naturally and two tracks recorded for John Peel.

Heralded by their last top ten hit to date I’m With Stupid, the duo teamed up with Trevor Horn for 2006’s Fundamental. Only one “Further listening” CD accompanies the remaster, but it’s crammed with 22 bonus tracks including demos, B-sides, remixes and even ringtones. Remember those?

The three remastered albums are now available for pre-order and will also be released on 180g heavyweight vinyl, with expanded editions of Yes (2009) and Elysium (2012) to follow.
